Monument record STU 064 - A probable World War II pillbox and possible associated earthworks are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Holbrook Road, Stutton

A probable World War II pillbox and possible associated earthworks are visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, centred on TM 15173497 to the north of Holbrook Road, Stutton. The pillbox is of the Type 23 half-open, half-roofed form, orientated so that its entrance faces south. To the south of the probable pillbox, two small circular earthwork features are visible, one at TM 15153491 and one at TM 15203492. The feature to the west consists of a small pit approximately 3m in diameter, possibly surrounded by a small bank. The other feature to the east consists of a slightly larger ring bank enclosing an area of around 2.5m in diameter. The date and function of these features are unclear but it is possible they are small gun emplacements or weapons pits relating to some form of wartime activity on the site. (S1) (S2) The area is now part of a housing development and the pillbox has been removed. It is not clear as to whether any of the earthworks survive. (S3)
