Full Description
The ground below the kitchen and boiler room floors within Street Farmhouse, Fressingfield was excavated to a depth of 1m following a major leak of central heating oil to remove any fuel-contamination. The building dates to the late 16th/17th century and is Grade II listed. The work showed that the existing chimney fireplace was added/altered during the 18th century and evidence for earlier hearth was found. Archaeological deposits that indicated a permanent occupation of the site predating the current building were preserved at the rear of the farmhouse but the sample was too small to be characterised or dated closely (S1).
