Monument record FSF 007 - Whittingham Hall (Med)

Large moat. Square enclosure with traces of smaller square in one corner. Isolated, unoccupied on N side of Hall.

Map of 1702 shows the moat as a regular rectangle with semi-circular projections at the four corners. A bridge or causeway across the middle of the southern arm of the moat led to the house, set back slightly from the edge of the moat, on what appears to be a narrow green lawn. The house is shown as rectangular with 3 tiers of windows (the lowest windows are smaller and may represent a semi-basement), a central door, a small pediment at the top and 4 chimneys. Between the moat and the road was an forecourt containing an L-shaped building on its W side and another building on the E side. A possible bridge in the middle of the W arm of the moat led to a subsidiary ditched enclosure with circular features at its NW and SW corners - these are shown as green circles with tree symbols around the edges of the circles (S1).

Domesday vill of Wettingham, an estate of 1.5 carucates held by Roger of Poitou (S2).
Moat had a broad S arm, this being the main frontage; the other arms are distinctly narrower. There are some indications that there were rounded projections at the corners, as depicted on the 1702 map, but these were on the moated island, not the outer edge of the moat, as depicted on the map. The `subterranean passages' at the NW corner contain C17 bricks and are probably the remains of vaulting for some structure built over the corner. There is no question of human entrance and they appear too numerous for sewer outfalls. The pond in the interior appears just to be a straight pond and not the remains of a square enclosure (S3).
