Full Description
2002/2003: The monitoring of the excavation of a large semi-basemented area, part of a major mixed-use development on the site, revealed alluvial layers deposited in the tidally washed shore of the river Orwell. The upper layers were dated from their included artefacts, pottery and leather, to the 16th & 17th century. An overlying layer of rubble may have been part of a major reclamation episode identified previously at Neptune Quay (IAS 6601) to the north-west and thought to have taken place during the 17th century. Naturally occurring sands and gravels were recorded towards the eastern end of the site immediately west of Duke Street which would once have been the strand-line roadm.
A small assemblage of leather (38 items) was recovered from Neptune Marina comprising principally of post-medieval shoe components, leather broken or cut from larger, unrecognisable objects and a small amount of waste leather from cobbling and possibly shoemaking. (S1).
