Monument record BSE 216 - Post-medieval features, 84 Southgate Street

Monitoring identified a number of post-medieval features and residual pottery sherds. The base of a narrow wall, made of brick and mortared flint and paralleling Southgate Street, corresponded to part of a building shown on the 1887 OS map. The wall cut across the probable ditches which had been infilled with dark loam and contained 17th - 18th century pottery. Evidence of a cellar 2.68m wide was seen which had been infilled with a black charcoal loam and the bottom of the cellar was beyond the depth of the footing trenches. The north-western side of the cellar was truncated by a later phase of build (S1).
