Monument record GDD 012 - Gedding Hall Brick Kiln

Brick kiln discovered in 2001 and partially excavated by local amateurs. Consisting of two tunnels or firing chambers with brick walls and a central brick spine and stoke pit, measuring 4m wide by over 4.5m long. Tidied and part excavated by SCCAS in September 2002, details in (S1). Radiocarbon dating from the stoke pit gave likely dates of between 1480 & 1660 AD.
The kiln is comparable to an example found at Danbury, Essex, and the bricks which are very variable, are broadly comparable to bricks used to construct Gedding Hall and its gatehouse (see GDD 001). Alternatively the bricks may have been used elsewhere, particularly the church (GDD 003) or structures in the village (see S1).
Note: Priory Farm to south linked by track in 1837 (OS map) - suggesting possible ownership at that date - documentary search needed to check earlier ownership & possible details of kiln construction etc.
