Monument record HGH 016 - Castle Barn

March 2001: Monitoring concentrated on the main compartment of the barn and two smaller rooms at the eastern end of the present barn. The existing barn was built in several phases, the first in the late C17 (main barn) and the second in the C19 (Rooms 2 and 3). Beneath the concrete and beaten-earth floors of all three rooms was found a thick layer of compacted flint and brick rubble - no archaeological features were uncovered in this area. A total of 22 observed phenomena were revealed within Rooms 2 & 3, some appear to be related to the construction of the existing barn, but several features appear to predate the barn.
A large pit and five small post holes were identified in the western half of Room 2 and an oval feature contained four sherds of EMed ware (C11-C12). The presence of broken pottery and charred animal bones may well be indicative of househole refuse. For futher details see (S1).
