Monument record SUY 040 - Sudbury (Med)

Area of Med town of Sudbury. Urban by LSax times - see Sax (S1). `Area of archaeological interest' defined in Babergh Local Plan in April 1990 (S2)(& see S4). Area of town defined on W side by `Mill Stream', on N & E sides by presumed defensive ditch along surviving street plan, with secondary settlement (see SUY 011 and 022) surrounding C15 church of St Peter (SUY 013), and to S by defensive ditch which had been backfilled by C13/C14 (for excavation see SUY 034), along line of (?) surviving street plan with further secondary expansion toward River Stour and around C15 church (?) of All Saints (SUY 035). Area also includes church of St Gregory (SUY 032 - also Sax) and adjoining college (SUY 004); Chapel of Holy Sepulchre (SUY 026); Dominican Friary (SUY 005); Hospital (SUY 006); various finds (SUY 018, 027 & 030) and excavations revealing Med features and artefacts (SUY 014-017, 025, 028-030).
