Description
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on ground level reduction prior to the construction of a new industrial unit. Two site visits were made to monitor the soil strip and ground reduction across an area of approximately 40m by 58m. It became obvious during the first visit that the area had been previously stripped of topsoil, possibly when the adjacent industrial units had been constructed. A topsoil overburden remained only in the lower areas. Subsoil remained in patches of variable depths across the site, a maximum depth of 0.10m was observed.
In the area along the western boundary therewas a drop, from floor level of a destroyed barn down to the new working level of the development. The difference in ground level had been landscaped into a slope, which contained visible modern ceramic materials. Beyond the appearance of late 19th ceramics no archaeological finds or features were encountered (S1).
