Site Event/Activity record ESF22703 - Watching Brief - 19 Ballingdon Street, Sudbury

Notifcation was given for the excavation of strip foundations on a single storey exstension at 19 Ballingdon street. The site was visited by Tom Loader for the County Archaeological Service on Wednesday 7 October 1998. On arrival only the south western footing (that forming the party wall with the adjacent property) had been opened. The trench had been excavated to a depth of 1m and the fill was comprised of uniform garden topsoil from top to bottom. Mixed in with the fill was a considerable amout of ceramic building material fragments, pottery and general debris, appearing to be no earlier than Victorian in date. A circular brick well (infilled) was located against the north west corner of the earlier single storey exstension, at the interface between this structure and the footings for the new extension. This had not been emptied, but the fill displayed no difference in character to that found elsewhere in the trench. As there was unlikely to be a requirement to excavate the trench any deeper; the ground appeared firm below, and, as the natural subsoil surface had not been reached, it was decided that a return visit to monitor the remainder of the footings would not be of any value.
