Description
Stripped area through centre area seen on first visit. 1 very large trench right round centre feature seen, footings and small stripped area near plot 7 and 8 also seen on 16/3/05.
Visit 1 – central area examined once stripped. Only sandy gravel seen – natural.
Visit 2 – trench around central area open. C.1m wide x c.1.2m deep. Sections differ. Average around 90cm made ground (bricks, rubble etc), 30cm bright orange gravelly natural. Sometimes totally made ground, sometimes c.50cm natural, 70cm made ground. Also trench from central area to road seen – deeper (1.5m) but same section matrix as central trench.
Plots 7 and 8 being stripped at time of visit. Saw topsoil strip – dark blackish sandy clay with occasional brick rubble.
Spoil visually inspected.
No finds or features found on either visit.
