Description

Twenty-one 40m x 1.8m trenches were excavated to evaluate a 5% sample of the development area. Medieval clay pits dated to the later 13th-14th century were recorded in the north-west of the site, with residual pottery suggesting earlier activity dating from the 12th century. Two groups of drainage gullies were recorded at the northern and southern ends of the site, divided by a stream valley. These are tentaively dated to the medieval period and are interpreted as land drains dug to improve the heavy clay soil for agriculture. The medieval clay quarrying and agriculture is related to similar activity recorded in Cedars Park phase 4b immediately to the north-west, and to a medieval farmstead dated to the 12th-14th centuries, excavated in Cedars Park phase 4a 500m to the north-west. of the site Project status: Complete Yes, Validated Yes Previous/Future Work: Previous Yes, Future No Associated Identifiers: Sitecode SUP 023 Contracting Unit No. 2031 NMR No. 1545611 Project Type: Field evaluation Development Type: Housing estate Methods and Techniques: Targeted Trenches Position in the Planning Process: Between deposition of an application and determination Reason for Investigation: Direction from Local Planning Authority - PPG16 Site status: None Current Land use: Cultivated Land 3 - Operations to a depth more than 0.25m Monument Type(s)/Period(s): CLAY PIT Medieval , LAND IMPROVEMENT DRAIN Medieval Artefact Type(s)/Period(s): POT Medieval PROJECT LOCATION Area 3.10 Hectares Grid Reference: TM066585 Point Height 40.00 - 47.50 metres PROJECT CREATOR(S) Brief originator: Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Design originator: Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit Director/Manager: Patrick Allen Supervisor: Trevor Ennis DIGITAL ARCHIVE Recipient: Suffolk CC Contents: Ceramics, Stratigraphic, Survey, Worked stone/lithics Media: Images raster / digital photography, Survey, Text PAPER ARCHIVE Recipient: Suffolk CC Contents: Ceramics, Stratigraphic, Survey, Worked stone/lithics Media: Context sheet, Drawing, Map, Notebook - Excavation, Research, General Notes, Photograph, Plan, Report, Section, Survey PHYSICAL ARCHIVE Recipient: Suffolk CC Contents: Ceramics, Worked stone/lithics BIBLIOGRAPHY Publication Type: Grey literature (unpublished document/manuscript) Title: Land at Creeting Road (Cedars Park Phase 10C), STwomarket, Suffolk.
