Description
An archaeological excavation of land at St John's House Hospital, Lion Road, Palgrave identified scattered prehistoric finds and evidence of activity on the site throughout the Roman period, with a series of ditches, a possible palisade or fenceline and a substantial rubbish pit. An Early Saxon burial is then the last real indication of activity on the site until the post-medieval period, where the site formed part of St John's Farm. This means that there was a near complete absence of any archaeological deposits relating to activity contemporary with the medieval Chapel of St John the Baptist, which is believed to have been situated in the immediate vicinity. In the post-medieval period a range of ancillary buildings and yards occupied the site. Identified features relating to this phase of activity consisted of a wall foundation, a brick culvert and a clay lined tank/pit of uncertain function, with an overlying post-medieval topsoil layer.
