Site Event/Activity record ESF15487 - Excavated by SAU (JC)

Four day excavation in September 1989 carried out at St. Anderw's Church which is now redundant. The excavation took place in the places where eight concrete pads were going to be put through the floor in order to support a dwelling. The aim of the excavation was to find evidence of the church mentioned in the Domesday Book, or which nothing is visible in the existing nave/chancel structure. Five of the six pads in the Nave revealed Norman flintwork which had been cut by medieval foundations. Three of these contained corners.The sixth trench in the SE corner of the church was blocked by concrete but the SW corner hole contained a small piece of floor from the Norman period. The medieval foundations were unusually thick in this trench an coincided with a crack in the north wall-this may suggest a replacement west wall.
